Wayne Rooney has revealed he tried to get then-Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo booked earlier in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final in which he received his marching orders.
Ronaldo was widely condemned for trying to get the England striker sent off in Gelsenkirchen after winking to the Portugal bench when Rooney was ordered off.
But the United striker has admitted to club channel MUTV that he had been guilty of a very similar offence earlier in the game when Ronaldo took a dive.
"I went up to the referee and said he had dived and he should be booked. No one saw that," he revealed.
"Everyone saw mine because it was a red card."
Rooney also admits he misses Ronaldo, who left in a world record move to Real Madrid, and cannot believe the superstar is not among the three nominees for this year's Ballon D'Or.
After filling the breach last season until his ankle injury, Rooney has not scored a goal in open play since March, but says he is not bothered by the record.
He said: "We have been doing well since I came back and I know I will start scoring goals again, I have no worries about that."
