Ah, the debate that has taken place in every football/soccer fan’s mind in this decade.
Who has gained the title of best player in the world, Lionel Messi, the diminutive whirlwind who plays in the mold of his idol, Diego Maradona, or Cristiano Ronaldo, the man known by football fans for his incredible power and foot skills, and by teenage girls for his faux hawk and Armani underwear advertisements.
So, who is better?
Messi, born in Argentina, is height, 5-7. What he lacks in size he makes up for in foot skills and speed. The left-footed warrior changes pace and makes cutbacks better than anyone else in La Liga. When Messi gets the ball near midfield, he can basically dribble through anybody in his way on the way to the goal. He is one of the toughest footballers to tackle in the world, given his size, speed, and foot skills.
He has also had a tremendous amount of success at the club level, winning La Liga four times with a star-studded Barcelona squad, including this past season. Messi has also contributed heavily to one Copa Del Rey title. Barcelona has also won the Champions League twice with Messi at striker.
Messi has few faults in his game (as does Ronaldo). One problem is that he tries to finish runs without a pass to an open teammate sometimes. However, he takes his greatest joy in setting up his Barcelona teammates for goals, and this seldom happens.Another fault is his size. While Messi is incredibly small, he makes up for it most of the time with tenacity and grit. He is not afraid of anybody on the pitch.
While Messi could be the best player in the world, Ronaldo is by far the most well known soccer player in the universe. Teenage girls adore him, But Ronaldo’s footballing ability is also off-the-charts. In reality, even though Ronaldo is bigger than Messi, both players’ styles are very similar. Ronaldo also has great speed, and his foot skills are tremendous. Ronaldo’s step-overs are lethal, and his cutbacks are pretty nice.
His strength is great, and Ronaldo puts fear into defender’s minds when they see him searing down the pitch right at them.
While his strength is great, Ronaldo can be a bit of a wimp sometimes. He falls down too early a lot, which supporters hate.
Also, old-fashioned English football fans call him a pretty boy because of his shaved body and faux hawk.
But, that is the rage among all soccer players, and I think England’s rage towards Ronaldo is just sour grapes because he left Manchester United for Spainish club Real Madrid.
So, the answer to the question that was asked at the beginning of this article:
Who is better, Messi or Ronaldo?
In my opinion, I’d give a slight edge to Ronaldo, Plus ronaldo finishes end to end runs better than anyone in football, including messi.
But really, it’s just a matter of opinion. Both footballers are incredible players, and you don’t have to pick a favorite. But you do have to appreciate how great their skills are.
